Lois Alter Mark is a Travel Expert for USA Today 10Best.com and a contributor to Forbes.com, where she writes seven travel columns a month. She writes about everything from luxury spas, cruises and hotels to quirky museums and street food, and is also a regular contributor to AAA Midwest Traveler and Southern Traveler.

Because of her blog, Oprah Winfrey selected Lois to accompany her on the Ultimate Australian Adventure in 2010. Since then, Lois has won three BlogHer Voices of the Year awards, was twice named a Finalist in the NATJA Awards and was named Humor Writer of the Month by Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop.

Lois is a former publicist who loves helping destinations tell their stories. Native New Yorkers, she and her husband are empty nesters now living in Southern California, where they’re still searching for a good slice of pizza.

What got you into travel writing?

I've been writing for more than 30 years (OMG!) and I've always loved traveling, so once the kids were out of the house, I decided to combine my two passions. It was the best decision I ever made, and it's given me some amazing experiences, both alone, with old and new friends, and with my husband and kids in different combinations.

What's the most challenging part of travel writing for you?

Balancing travel and home life. As much as I love traveling, I also love being home, and I need that time to write, to connect with my family and friends, to catch up on movies, to take care of bills and doctor appointments and the mundane stuff of life. It's hard to pass up opportunities but, like the flight attendants say, you have to take care of yourself first. My husband and I sometimes fantasize about retiring on a permanent Viking Ocean Cruise, where we could do all of that and have the best of both worlds!

What is one thing [equipment or personal item] you can’t go without on the road?

My phone! What did we ever do before cell phones?! Besides being a necessity for email and social media, I make sure it's always filled with books, movies and TV shows. I'm an avid reader and I have to have some good novels with me when I travel.

What’s your most unusual and/or memorable travel experience?

That is an impossible question to answer. There is something memorable about every trip I've ever taken. Being kissed by an elephant in Botswana was definitely a highlight as was walking across lava fields in Iceland and getting a personal tour of Denmark with author Sara Blaedel, the Danish "Queen of Crime." But I've also appreciated every minute of my spa trips to Arizona, all the chefs who have cooked amazing meals for me and every hotel that took the time to welcome me with treats that showed they actually read my blog.

What is the best piece of advice you could give to a rookie travel journalist?

Under promise and over deliver. Always.
