The local Country Inn & Suites in Burlington has an annual event over Veterans Day weekend in which they host veterans. All rooms are complimentary, with activities, music, and a community dinner provided by the local college’s culinary students. The community is invited to be involved by providing gifts to the guests as well. One of the local elementary schools, South Mebane Elementary, had their 2nd grade students make thank you cards for the veterans. The general manager at the Country Inn & Suites stated that the veterans were very moved as they received these handmade cards. One Vietnam veteran in particular made a special trip to the school to thank the students and meet the designer of his card, mentioning how meaningful it was to receive such a card, especially since many folks were not supportive of the soldiers returning from Vietnam.
