Biography
As a writer for over 30 years, Candy has worked in a wide variety of markets. For the last 14 years she’s focused her efforts on accessible travel—travel for people with mobility disabilities. Today she’s the editor of Emerging Horizons, an accessible travel magazine.
As the author of Barrier Free Travel; A Nuts & Bolts Guide For Wheelers And Slow Walkers, Candy is the recognized expert in the field of accessible travel.
Harrington’s second book, There Is Room at the Inn; Inns and B&Bs for Wheelers and Slow Walkers is the first guidebook devoted entirely to accessible inns and B&Bs; while her third title 101 Accessible Vacations; Travel ideas for Wheelers and Slow Walkers is billed as an accessible vacation idea book
Candy is also a contributing author to Kids On Wheels, a resource guide for wheelchair-using kids and their parents.
Candy’s work can be found in disability-related magazines including New Mobility, PN, Ability, SCI Life, Kids on Wheels, Active Living and Arthritis Today ; as well as mainstream publications such as the Dallas Morning News and Transitions Abroad. She’s covered accessible travel for the travel industry in TravelAge West and Cruise Agent, and provided internet content for travel websites such as BootsnAll and Rezoom. Harrington also pens consumer-focused accessible travel columns for Special Living, Travel World International, Inside MS, Stroke Smart and Trips and Getaways. She also blogs regularly at www.BarrierFreeTravels.com.
Candy’s Barrier Free Travels radio show can be heard on WFNP 88.7 FM. It’s part of the Independence Journal, which reaches a quarter-of-a million listeners in the Hudson Valley of New York.
Candy is the Vice President in charge of Professional Development for the North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) and a member if the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) and the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW).
She resides in Northern California with her travel photographer husband.
