Biography
BIOGRAPHY/RESUME GARY CRALLE, TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER/WRITER/LECTURER
NATIONALITY & PASSPORT: Canadian
BACKGROUND & WORKING PHILOSOPHY
Since childhood I have felt compelled to observe and record the world around me, with personal comment. My grandfather had a natural talent for sketching, something I inherited. Since my university days, photography has become a major form of self-expression. My photographic career was nurtured on small newspapers, grew into portrait, commercial, PR and corporate work, then finally into stock photography based largely on travel. I enjoy taking personal licence with reality, looking for highly graphic images either as a photojournalist or as a painter with camera---sometimes both.
I market images and travel stories directly to travel editors within North America, as time permits, and via 3 picture agencies for international sales. My work appears in a wide variety of media---from magazines and newspapers to textbooks and advertisements---in over 35 countries on a continual basis. Photo essays with a dedicated story thread are my passion.
As a travel journalist, I concentrate on what is good for the body and soul (culture & gastronomy, health & leisure) and what enables us to appreciate our environment (the visual arts, urban & wilderness travel, self-discovery/adventure).
