Chad's Q&A:

What got you in to travel writing?
My wife, Laurie got me in to travel writing. She is a tough editor, a great mentor and the best writer I know.

What’s the most challenging part of travel writing for you?
The most challenging part of travel writing is being away from my wonderful family. Laurie and I have five bright and talented kids, we are a close-knit family and enjoy spending time together doing things like skiing, camping, fishing, hunting, hiking and boating.

What is one thing [equipment or personal item] you can’t go without on the road?
I can not go on the road without a good book. I truly love seeing new places and getting to know new people, but the many hours spent in airports and on planes would be tough to tolerate without the temporary escape of a well-written book.

What’s your most unusual and/or memorable travel experience?
I spent a week with four other talented journalists on a tour of New Mexico ski resorts. At least three of these people are fellow NATJA members—you know who you are—thanks for sharing that trip with me. I have very fond memories of that week and wish each of you the best!

How did you learn about NATJA, and why did you join?
I first heard about NATJA years ago from a veteran travel journalist. I eventually joined myself to share my experiences and learn from others in the group. I am proud to say we have a diverse collection of writers with a vast array of experiences, who wouldn’t want to tap into an opportunity like this?

What is the best piece of advice you could give to a rookie travel journalist?
Be curious. Be curious about new people you meet. Be curious about the wonderful places you will visit. And be curious about how much better you can be. Push yourself to become a better listener, a better writer and a better person.
