KEY WEST, Fla. — Aspiring and current Conch Republic citizens can celebrate the offbeat “nation’s” birthday April 19-28 with activities including a lighthearted sea battle for tall ships, a drag race for men dressed as women and a parade dubbed the world’s longest because its route stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.

The 37th annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration commemorates the Florida Keys’ symbolic secession from the United States — an act inspired by the 1982 establishment of a U.S. Border Patrol blockade that virtually stopped traffic on the only road connecting the Keys and mainland Florida.

Be a Force of Nature in the San Juan Islands Come out and Play for Earth Day!
Procession of the Species, Great Islands Cleanup, & lots of fun for kids

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” It’s hard to argue with Nobel Prize winner and scientific genius Albert Einstein. Take his advice and come to the San Juan Islands for a chance to “look deep into nature” this April during National Volunteer Month. Spend a day (or more!) working with locals to maintain trails in beautiful Moran State Park on Orcas Island, or clean up a beach on San Juan, Orcas, or Lopez Islands. Ride your bike in the Tour de Lopez and then enjoy the Procession of the Species Parade in Lopez Village. After a trip to the islands, you might just “understand everything better.”
