2025 May Featured Destination of the Month: Oneida County Tourism

Oneida County is located in the Central New York region of New York State, directly off of I-90. We cater to those seeking smaller cities, villages and towns in a serene section of NYS. Oneida County is home to a beverage and cheese trail, family-friendly attractions, casinos, nature, and so much more. Our area loves food and that has translated into our A-to-Z Food Tour. Most recently, we’ve created a mural trail that’s ideal for photos.

1. What is your destination most known for?

Oneida County is best known for its award-winning food scene—think Utica greens, tomato pie, and halfmoons as well as nationally recognized sporting events like AHL hockey, the Boilermaker Road Race, and Utica City FC indoor soccer. The county also thrives on its rich agricultural roots, offering everything from farm-to-table dining and u-pick farms to artisan cheese and beverage trails. And with the Erie Canal celebrating its 200th anniversary, Oneida County proudly honors its place in this historic landmark’s legacy.

2. During this season, what are some must-see attractions?

Spring in Oneida County brings the much-anticipated opening of the new Utica Children’s Museum, blooming tulips across the region, and family favorites like Fort Rickey and Fort Stanwix. Food and drink lovers can explore our Cheese Trail and the Heart of NY Craft Beverage Trail, while Turning Stone Resort offers world-class gaming, dining, golf, spas, and more. Plus, with several charming towns along the historic Erie Canal, you can experience scenic beauty and 200 years of canal history all in one trip.

3. What hidden gem should not be missed when visiting your destination?

Some of our favorite hidden gems include beloved local eateries like Rooster’s, Golden’s, The Black Stallion and Willie’s, sweet spots like So Sweet Candy Shoppe, and a peaceful rural escape just outside Utica at North Star Orchards—perfect for fresh produce, baked goods, and scenic charm.

4. What’s one feature that can’t be missed when visiting your website?

Our website offers an interactive guide to Oneida County’s abundant nature and outdoor activities, including scenic trails, state parks, and unique natural areas like the Rome Sand Plains and Verona Beach State Park. Be sure to check out our blogs too—they’re a great way to discover what’s happening now, from seasonal highlights to insider tips on events, food, and attractions.

5. How did you learn about NATJA and why did you join?

We learned about NATJA through the industry and I attended their show several years ago to make more media contacts.

6. Is there anything else you feel travel media should know about your destination?

Oneida County is home to the AHL’s Utica Comets, the iconic Boilermaker Road Race—one of the most celebrated 15Ks in the nation —and rich history, including the first dig of the Erie Canal and a city whose name (Utica!) was famously picked out of a hat. Just 20 minutes away, Turning Stone Resort Casino is rapidly expanding into one of the largest destination resorts in Upstate New York, offering world-class entertainment, golf, dining, and luxury accommodations.
