Martin started his career as newspaper photographer and writer, advancing to managing editor of 9 weekly newspapers. He Left to form ad agency/pr firm which ran for 35 years. Sold two years and started travel blog Wandering Rose Travels with his wife. They write about their active travels in the hope of inspiring others to hike, bike or paddle when they travel. He got to write and do photography a bit with the agency, but it was so marketing-oriented it was more for pay than pleasure. What got you into travel writing?
Started career in journalism, but spent most of working life in an ad agency. Sold the agency to travel and return to journalistic writing and photography.
What’s the most challenging part of being a travel journalist for you?
At the moment it is being grounded because of COVID-19. Much of our travel was international prior to this. I see the near future focused on domestic travel, within driving distance of home.
What is one thing [equipment or personal item] you can’t go without on the road?
Laptop. It is helpful for me to write some and process photos daily while memories are vivid and fresh.
How did you learn about NATJA and why did you join?
I’ve been our of journalism for 35 years. I joined NATJA to get connected with the travel journalism community to learn and grow and network.
What is the best piece of advice you could give to a rookie travel journalist?
Be persistent. Work on pitching every day if you are freelance. And do your homework before making a pitch so your pitch aligns with the client’s audience. Use their language in the pitch to show that you understand their audience and their brand.
