Fairbanks, Alaska (AK) – On Saturday, December 10th from 4-6 p.m. at Lat 65 Brewing Company Explore Fairbanks is hosting its inaugural Golden Heart Giving: Tourism Cares for Fairbanks fundraiser to benefit the Fairbanks Rescue Mission. The Mission provides emergency shelter and life changing programs to those experiencing hardships or homelessness in Interior Alaska. Scott McCrea, president and CEO of Explore Fairbanks, says, “The visitor industry does want to be part of the solution to help with the growing issues of homelessness in our community as it impacts all of us, residents and visitors alike; and by residents, I also mean those members of our community who are experiencing homelessness. This fundraising event is an attempt to do just that.”
People can either donate men’s and women’s winter coats, boots, socks and gloves or make a monetary contribution to the organization. According to the Mission, 83% of every dollar goes directly towards helping guests. The Mission is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit; all donations are tax-deductible.
To date, $2,000 has been raised from Clarion Hotel & Suites and Princess Cruises / Holland America Group, each making a $1,000 donation. Travel businesses large and small are intimately involved in their communities, supporting local charities with financial contributions, auction items, door prizes, volunteers and more. Explore Fairbanks along with the local visitor industry are continuing their commitment to giving through a festive community event that raises money for a local non-profit.
In addition, the event will include an “ugly sweater contest” for Explore Fairbanks partners who attend for a chance to win a 2” ad in the 2024 Fairbanks Visitors Guide or credit towards an already purchased ad.
