Asian fusion, delicious Italian and Mexican fare, Southern-style BBQ, sweet treats, craft brews and cocktails, and of course, deep dish pizza… Wouldn’t you like to try them all? Savor the Southland is our mobile passport program that highlights some of the best eateries around Chicago Southland and encourages visitors to sample everything our culinary scene offers. Each check-in at a participating restaurant earns you points that can be redeemed for excellent Southland-branded swag.

February is Restaurant Month – Savor the Southland check-ins will provide DOUBLE points, and you can earn additional points for “must-try” dishes and redeeming coupons from the passport!

Black History Month

February is black history month, a time to celebrate African-American achievement in U.S. history. Check out these fantastic events that highlight African-American history, culture and achievement.

Muntu + Deeply Rooted at Governors State University Center for Performing Arts in University Park on February 3rd promises to bring two incredible Chicago-based companies, Muntu Dance Theatre and Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, to showcase authentic contemporary and ancient African and African-American dance, music and storytelling.

Also taking place on February 3rd, you can enjoy Melody Angel – Chicago Rock & Blues at Freedom Hall in Park Forest. Melody Angel is an incredibly talented vocalist and guitarist that the Chicago Sun-Times has described as “Chicago’s next Blues Star, Big Mama Thornton meets Jimi Hendrix.”

On February 24th-25th, you can head out to the Sand Ridge Nature Center for the self-guided Underground Railroad Walks, an opportunity to walk along the Underground Railroad route connected to the Calumet Region during the mid-1800s.

Walking in a winter wonderland

If you’ve ever thought that things seem quieter and more peaceful in a winter wonderland, that’s because they really are. There’s science behind it. Freshly fallen snow actually absorbs sound. One of the best spots to take a hike in that snowy silence is Sand Ridge Nature Center in South Holland. Check out our Winter Walk blog for all the need-to-know information before you head out on your trek.
