Visit Galveston Celebrates Destination Professionals Day

GALVESTON, Texas (Feb. 18, 2026) – Visit Galveston, the organization dedicated to promoting Galveston Island as a visitor destination, is proud to celebrate February 19, 2026, as Destination Professionals Day in recognition of their efforts to drive tourism to Galveston.

Tourism is the third largest driver of Galveston’s economy, contributing more than $126 million in state and local taxes, generating around $1.3 billion every year in visitor spending and accounts for one out of every three jobs on the island. As Galveston Island’s official destination marketing organization and a division of the Galveston Park Board, Visit Galveston supports the community and advances the island’s position as a leading year-round destination. Through integrated marketing, public relations and sales initiatives, Visit Galveston promotes the island’s history, culture and coastal experiences.

“Destination Professionals Day is an opportunity to recognize the dedicated team behind the scenes who work every day to elevate Galveston’s presence and strengthen our local economy,” said Tony Lyle, Executive Director of Visit Galveston. “Their efforts help drive visitation, support local businesses and ensure our island remains an exciting and competitive year-round destination. We are proud to champion Galveston’s beaches, history and culture while providing meaningful value for our community.”

Why February 19th

The date holds special significance: on February 19, 1896, members of the Detroit Chamber of Commerce and the Detroit Manufacturers Club came together at the Cadillac Hotel in Detroit, Michigan, to form the world’s first destination organization, the Detroit Convention and Businessman’s League. With a mission of “hustling for conventions,” this group laid the foundation for an industry that has since grown into a global driver of economic and social progress.

Recognizing February 19 as Destination Professionals Day aims to raise awareness by highlighting the vital contributions of destination professionals in enriching community life and driving economic development; celebrate the achievements and recognize the hard work and dedication of destination professionals across all roles and organizations; and inspire future destination leaders by showcasing the diverse and rewarding career opportunities available in the sector to attract the next generation of professionals.

The selection of February 19 as Destination Professionals Day pays homage to the founding of the first destination organization 130 years ago that sparked a global movement that continues to transform destinations like Galveston Island into ideal places to visit, live, work, play and invest.
