My work as both a photojournalist and writer sits at the intersection of wildlife, place, and human story. Shooting with Sony cameras, I photograph and craft articles with the mindset of a reporter and the sensitivity of a visual artist—looking not only for beauty but also for meaning. I have spent a lifetime exploring all seven continents, driven by curiosity and a desire to uncover untold stories about people, wild places, nature, and culture.  My specialty areas and primary interests include local culture and history, street art, farm-to-fork and local breweries/distilleries, adventure, natural wonders, and, of course, wildlife.  My photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums, including the Museum of Northern California Art, and in juried exhibitions such as Viewpoint Gallery and the California State Fair, where, in 2024, one of my photos was recognized as “best in show.” My images have earned numerous gold awards, imaging excellence awards, and best-in-show accolades from leading professional associations representing nature, photography, travel, and outdoor pursuits. My work is also featured on HITravelTales.com, in our HI Travel Tales newsletter, and has appeared in a wide range of print and digital uses, from editorial features to destination marketing and corporate installations. Publications that have featured my photos include BBC.com, Travel & Leisure, Forbes, and others. My writing continues to garner recognition, with numerous gold medals and journalism excellence awards for feature writing, photo essays, and humor. Prior to focusing primarily on travel writing and photography, I was a highly acclaimed outdoor writer, including being recognized as the Outdoor Writer of the Year by the Outdoor Writers Association of California in 1993. My stories and columns appeared in Outside, Backpacker, Men's Journal, Men's Health, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, The Christian Science Monitor, San Jose Mercury News, Portland Oregonian, Salt Lake Tribune, Adventure West Magazine, and others. My published books (some of which are actually still in print) include No Shit There I Was, Compass & Map Navigator, Facing The Extreme, and Camping For Dummies.
