What got you into travel writing?

I've always loved to write about my travels, even before I started doing it professionally. I would carry a journal with me and was constantly taking notes and jotting down short stories. There were no surprises when the progression from that led to a life of full time travel, travel writing and photography. But I'm still old fashioned, I like to carry a notepad and jot things down on paper.

What’s the most challenging part of travel writing for you?

Deadlines, hands down. For as long as I can remember I've been someone that likes to write from memory and inspiration. There are times I can sit down and thousands of words pour out of me. Other times, despite my best intentions, I can't get anything on paper and have to walk away until it comes to me. I think all writers have these issues but I am definitely not someone that can sit down and write on demand.

What one thing [equipment or a personal item] you can't go without on the road?

My camera. While a lot of people go through the motions of photography, I really enjoy using it as a way to bring people into the experiences that I am having.

What was your most unusual and/or memorable travel experience?

There are literally so many crazy travel stories I could share with you but one of the most memorable was the 19 weeks my husband and I spent traveling through Africa. We camped for 119 days through 14 countries from Cape Town, South Africa to Cairo, Egypt. It was epic. It was Africa. It was life changing.

What is the best piece of advice you could give to a rookie travel journalist?

Learn what kind of writer you are and stick to that. Don't try to change the style or process for writing your stories from what comes natural to you. There is no right or wrong way either, never forget that.
