Mike Fisher's Q&A:

What got you into travel writing?

A renowned Canadian journalist that I haphazardly shared a taxi with while I was university student recommended that I travel widely if I wanted to write ably and true - great advice.

What’s the most challenging part of travel writing for you?

Finessing the logistics of getting what I need when exploring and then delivering a story that satisfies the editor and inspires the reader.

What is one thing [equipment or personal item] you can’t go without on the road?

Water. A lot of it.

What’s your most unusual and/or memorable travel experience?

I flew with the Canadian military, the Red Cross and a handful of other reporters into Ukraine in the ‘90s to deliver much needed hospital supplies. I got an on the ground view of an economy disintegrating while touring regions that would not have been open to me otherwise. Met  determined, wonderful people.

What is the best piece of advice you could give to a rookie travel journalist?

Respect other cultures and people. Be curious and resourceful. Sometimes unexpected disasters that push you off track yield the best stories.
